We thought the dog days of summer would be a great time to visit some of the northernmost national parks in the lower 48 states--Isle Royale and Voyageurs--and we were right! Duluth, Minnesota, ended up being a fairly central point to reach both parks. We took a ferry from Grand Portage to Isle Royale (which is actually in Michigan), returned to Duluth (we actually stayed in Superior, Wisconsin for the night), then drove north to Voyageurs, staying overnight near International Falls. We focused on hiking, although both parks are probably better explored by boat. There were plenty of pubs for us to explore along the way and we found some of the best beers yet on this trip!
